I just love family portraits. The love, the laughter and all the silly smiles! This family portrait session was no different. I met this adorable family at a family's day out hosted by LWB (Ladies With Babies) event here in Austin and Victoria and I hit it off. They had recently moved to south Austin too and were opening a private dental practice, ATX Family Dental on south Congress. Their practice recently opened and it is a perfect fit for this amazing city. Right across the street is St. Edwards with the best field of wildflowers, perfect for family portraits :) Can't wait to see these guys again!

There is just something about newborn's that makes me want to stop and freeze time. Little Miss I was just as precious as I expected her to be. 6lbs and 10oz of pure cuteness, just like her mom! From her golden lashes all the way down to her squishy toes. Her big brother was so great, and even helped to show me how to give the "baby" a nuk. He also was so smart and showed off his baby sisters, toes, ears, and tummy. Pointing out each feature so accurately. Take a peek below and share in this amazing families newest addition. How To Plan For Your Newborn Portrait Session
How should I prepare for a successful newborn session? For newborn photographers, one of the most important things is to plan ahead so we can, to the best of our abilities, have your baby sleepy for the session. For the best result a full tummy = tired baby. If you can try and keep your baby awake for about an hour before your session, it will make them sleepier for me when you arrive. Also have them fed before you arrive and I’ll ask you to feed them again once you get here.
Mom’s please try to avoid any caffeine before the session if you are breast feeding. This will in turn make your baby more active and they may not sleep very well.
Also plan to loosen their diaper & clothing an hour or so before our session, it will help prevent red marks or diaper creases from showing up on your baby’s skin. Also avoid putting them in clothing that will be difficult to remove. This will in turn wake them up.
If you are breast feeding or using formula plan to bring extra milk if possible. Babies always eat more during newborn photo sessions. We want your little one asleep and full, and running out of formula or milk with a hungry baby could cause a session to end short.
What outfits should my newborn baby wear? For most of their newborn portrait session we will have them naked, however if there is a special blanket or accessory you would like to have your baby photographed with please let me know. For the last bit of the session we can cloth them in an outfit of your liking, no need to think too hard. Outfits that tiny are adorable not matter what pattern or color. See the checklist below for details.
What should Mom or Dad wear for our newborn session? Something comfortable and light, remember the studio will be warm. White or light/neutral colors are best. No graphics, bold stripes or prints. Bring an extra change of clothes in case your baby has an accident on you.
What happens if… No matter what your baby does, please know that I am always relaxed. I have photographed many, many newborn sessions and have seen everything. This session is supposed to be a special experience for you and I don’t want you stressed if the baby starts to cry. There will be plenty of time allowed for your session. If we need to take a break to feed, walk, rock, etc. we can do that. I want you to enjoy the experience of your session and this special bonding moment.
Check list for your session & what to pack:
Blankets that are special to you (made by grandma, embroidered with baby name, matches nursery, etc.), hats or booties you love, diaper cover, plain onsie, fun personal items that represent a hobby, favorite sports team, family heirlooms, etc.
Feeding supplies: anything you will need to nurse or bottle feed your baby. Make sure to bring extra formula, or an extra bottle of breastmilk.
A pacifier, this may be needed to help soothe baby. If you are nursing you may not be using a pacifier regularly yet, but it will be very important to have one available during your baby’s session.
A few extra diapers. I say 5-8 to be safe.
A set of light/comfy clothes to wear while your baby’s photos are being taken. A set of clothes to wear for a family photo (remembering no logos or busy prints please). Extra clothes in case your baby has an accident on you, which may very well happen.
Food for Mom or Dad: You may build up an appetite over the course of the session.

New Years Eve will never be the same for this amazing little family. Baby C was ready to make his debue, a little early and with only a few hours notice for Mom & Dad :). I got to hear the whole story while we sat and relaxed getting baby C ready for his newborn portrait session. I can't belive I have know these two for over 5 years now. I had the pleasure of captureing their beautiful wedding and have remained in contact ever since. When I saw them this last summer for their extended family session they threw in the suprize that they were expecting! Seeing their families reactions was priceless! And now little C is here and adorable as ever. I could not be more happy for them and their new little family. Cheers to the next few month until I see you all again.

Newborn Portrait Photography | What to expect
When should I schedule my newborn session?
We will tentatively schedule your session for about 6-8 days after your due date. As your due date approaches make sure to keep me filled in on any changes. Once you know when you will be arriving home please have someone call me to get scheduled that week.
If your baby was just born and is less than 14 days old, call today!
What age do you recommend for newborn portraits?
A newborn is BEST to photograph in the first 5-14 days of life. After 14 days old, most babies are typically more alert, may have baby acne and a colic are common at this age.
This is not to say after 14 days we can’t do a newborn session. We will just plan accordingly to your babies age and sleep/feeding habits.
Where do you recommend for the newborn session?
Brio Art offers newborn sessions at our portrait studio in Hopkins, MN or at your home.
- I will have the studio very warm for the day of your session (78+ degrees).
- If we are doing the session at you home please plan to have your house warm or put a space heater in the room we will be photographing in. The room with the most natural light will be ideal. This will help make your baby feel warm and cozy especially when they are naked. A newborn session can take up to 4 hours.

Newborn Portraits & Big Sister

I can remember back to when their first little peanut arrived. She was only 4 days old when her 1st photo session happened. Watching her grow from a tiny 4 day old to a "pinch-her-cheeks" cute 2 year old has been a joy I can't explain. So when I heard the news baby #2 was on the way I couldn't contain my happiness for their family. Baby Jude arrived this month and is the tiniest little peanut, even smaller than his big sister was.
